This coffee is a unique microlot sourced from farming communities across the district of Sironko, along the fertile foothills of Mount Elgon at 1800-2000 masl in eastern Uganda. Smallholders deliver their harvest to The Coffee Yard, a large drying facility established by producer Norman Mukuru. With nearly 2 decades of experience in the coffee sector, Norman founded The Coffee Yard to showcase coffees from across the region and refine post-harvest handling at scale. Since 2018, he has focused exclusively on developing natural processing methods, continuously refining drying techniques to achieve cleaner and more expressive cup profiles.
The Coffee Yard works closely with export partners at The Coffee Gardens, building traceability systems, offering training programmes and strengthening relationships with local farmers. This collaboration has improved consistency across lots and enabled greater economic security for those who contribute. After the ripe cherries arrive at The Coffee Yard, they are carefully sorted before being fermented in sealed barrels for up to 100 hours. Once this anaerobic phase is complete, the cherries are dried slowly and evenly on African raised beds, and then milled. Projects like this reflect a growing investment in quality-focused processing across Mount Elgon, where experience-driven experimentation is helping redefine expectations of Ugandan coffee. This lot really stood out for its expressive, distinctive character.
