Translating as “land between rivers”, the Aquiares Estate and Community is found by the Aquiares and Turrialba rivers, high on the slopes of the active Turrialba volcano. Environmental stewardship and a commitment to innovation have been cornerstones of the estate since Alfonso Robelo took over in the late 1980s, and today his son Diego continues that legacy.
Alongside refining and experimenting with processing methods, Diego has embraced new coffee genetics. This lot is an Esperanza, a very rare F1 hybrid developed by crossing Sarchimor T5296 with an Ethiopian landrace. Bred for resilience while maintaining exceptional cup quality, Aquiares is one of the first farms globally to cultivate this varietal. Turrialba’s ideal climate, soils and elevation, matched with the expertise of the farm team, mean that the estate is truly showcasing Esperanza’s potential, producing elegant, highly desirable profiles. For this natural lot, ripe cherries are slowly dried whole on raised beds and patios. Careful drying allows the fruit to remain in contact with the seed throughout the process, developing the coffee's sweetness, rich body and fruit character.
